Mirrorbox Theatre will be among the first in the country to produce The Parking Lot, by Adam Szymkowicz, September 18 - 26, 2020.

This play was designed specifically to be presented in a real parking lot, by two performers who live together. All audience members will watch the performance from the safety of their vehicles, and listen to it live over FM radio.

ABOUT THE PLAY

J and Terry are married, but they might not stay that way for long. While most couples have the benefit of negotiating the ups and downs of marriage in private, or in therapy, J and Terry have taken a different approach. Instead they have chosen a parking lot as the setting to answer one of life's biggest questions: Should we get divorced?

The Parking Lot is a new play by Adam Szymkowicz, internationally acclaimed playwright, and author of The Wooden Heart, recently performed in Mirrorbox Theatre's Out the Box series. His work balances whimsical conceits with characters who plumb the depths of human emotion.

This production features Marcia Hughes and Scot Hughes, a real-life Cedar Rapids married couple, and luminaries of the Eastern Iowa arts scene. Marcia has previously appeared with Mirrorbox in Exit Strategy, Orange Julius, The Democratic Field, and Chalk (Out the Box). Scot Hughes has appeared locally with Theatre Cedar Rapids, Giving Tree and RHCR.

The Iowa premiere of The Parking Lot is staged by Mirrorbox Founder and Artistic Director Cavan Hallman. For Mirrorbox he has previously helmed Exit Strategy, Red Speedo, Luna Gale, There Is a Happiness That Morning Is, Sender, and Orange Julius. Additionally, he has directed over a dozen Out the Box readings, which are regularly recognized as one of the best online theatre programs by TimeOut NY.

SAFETY PROTOCOLS

Mirrorbox Theatre is committed to presenting live theatre in a manner that respects the safety of cast, crew, and audiences. With that in mind, the following protocols will be followed for rehearsals and performances of The Parking Lot, a performance that will take place completely outdoors.

--------

Rehearsals will take place online to the greatest extent possible; followed by outdoor rehearsals. If indoor rehearsals are required, they will be limited to attendance by five people.

All cast and crew will have appropriate PPE, to be worn at all times, and provided by Mirrorbox Theatre. The only exception will be the two-person cast, who will be allowed to rehearse without PPE when they are “in-scene.” The two-person cast is a married couple living together, and therefore already exposed to one another.

In addition to wearing PPE, all cast and crew will maintain a separation of 6 feet.

Props and other contact surfaces will be cleaned and sanitized before and after every rehearsal and performance.

Temperature checks will be administered at the beginning of each rehearsal and performance. Any person exhibiting a temperature above 100.4 will be sent home until they are asymptomatic and their fever has subsided.

In order to limit contact, all ticket sales must be completed in advance. No cash or credit cards will be handled on-site.

Ushers at the parking lot entrance will be outfitted with PPE, provided by Mirrorbox Theatre. Ushers must also receive a temperature check prior to every performance.

All attendees must remain inside their cars at all times, with windows open no more than 3 inches, the width of a standard pop can. Engines may remain on for attendees who would like to utilize their vehicles’ heating and cooling systems. No attendees will be permitted outside of a vehicle (ex: the bed of a pickup truck).

The CSPS bathrooms will not be available to attendees, who must remain inside their vehicles at all times.

RAIN/REFUND POLICY

The Parking Lot is a fully outdoor performance. In case of inclement weather, we will make every effort to perform, including playing in light rain. Also, we may delay the performance to allow weather to pass. A decision to play or cancel will be made within approximately 45 minutes of the time the performance was delayed.

If a performance is cancelled, all attendees will be offered a rain date. If attendees are unable to attend a rain make-up performance, refunds may be requested by calling the CSPS box office at (319) 364-1580. No on-site refunds will be offered. Refunds are only available to patrons whose ticketed performance is cancelled due to inclement weather.
